Side note: why doesn't Qui Gon Jinn have a force ghost? Heck, why doesn't Mace Windu have a force ghost? He was hecka powerful, and one bad muther.

To get one's own identity separate from the rest of the force you had to sublimate your entire being into energy. Qui Gon Jinn actually has a force ghost. It was Qui Gon Jinn who first discovered this technique and it was his force spirit that guided Yoda and Obi Wan Kenobi to the path to discovering the technique.

Theoretically Mace Windu also has a force spirit.
